Kauhale ʻO Kīpapa: Kahikinui Community Cultural, Educational, and Resilience Center Preliminary Design Technical Assistance Summary Report

The Kahikinui Homestead Community (KHC) in Maui, Hawaii, faces energy resilience challenges due to its remote, off-grid location. This report summarizes preliminary technical assistance under the Energy Technology Innovation Partnership Project (ETIPP) to design a microgrid for a cultural, educational, and resilience center (“Kauhale ʻO Kīpapa”) comprised of six modular homes. Using the Microgrid Design Toolkit (MDT), detailed load profiles for a single home were analyzed alongside solar photovoltaic (PV), wind, and battery energy storage systems (BESS) options. Results for one home can be scaled linearly to estimate systems for all six homes, while acknowledging temporal diversity is not estimated. Findings show that hybrid PV and BESS, supplemented by small-scale wind turbines, offer cost-effective solutions balancing energy availability and upfront costs. Spatial constraints, resilience to extreme weather, and community priorities informed design recommendations. This work lays the foundation for detailed design and implementation to enhance KHC’s energy independence and disaster preparedness. product_type: Technical Report research_orgs: ["Sandia National Laboratories (SNL-NM), Albuquerque, NM (United States)"] sponsor_orgs: ["USDOE National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)"] subjects: ["24 POWER TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION","29 ENERGY PLANNING, POLICY, AND ECONOMY"] links: [{"rel":"citation","href":"https://www.osti.gov/biblio/3683718"},{"rel":"fulltext","href":"https://www.osti.gov/servlets/purl/3683718"}]
