Customer Stories Blogs News Frequently Asked Questions What is power conversion? Power conversion is the process of converting electrical energy from one form to another — AC to DC, DC to AC, or one voltage level to another — so that power from a source (a solar array, a battery, the grid) can be used by a load or fed into an electrical network. In utility-scale applications, power converters are the critical interface between generation assets, storage systems and the grid. Hitachi Energy designs, builds and commissions power conversion systems for battery energy storage (BESS), utility-scale solar PV and hybrid solar-plus-storage plants. What is a power conversion system (PCS) and what does it do? A bidirectional power electronics device that converts DC power from a battery into AC power for injection into the grid, and AC power from the grid into DC power for battery charging. In a utility-scale BESS, the PCS is the critical interface between the battery bank and the grid connection point. It controls charge and discharge rates, manages voltage and frequency response, and ensures grid code compliance. Hitachi Energy’s PCS is rated for battery voltages up to 1,500 VDC and is built on a liquid-cooled platform for performance in harsh environments. What is the difference between PCS and PVI? Both are built on Hitachi Energy’s common liquid-cooled platform but serve different plant configurations. PCS is for standalone BESS. PVI is a complete photovoltaic inverter station for standalone utility-scale solar PV. They can also be used for AC or DC-coupled hybrid solutions integrating both solar PV and battery storage into a single grid connection point. All controlled by the Power Plant Controller (PPC). What is DC coupling in a solar-plus-storage plant and why does it matter? In a DC-coupled plant, the solar panels and battery share a single DC bus and a single power conversion stage to the AC grid. This avoids the additional energy loss of an AC-DC-AC conversion step in AC-coupled designs. What grid services can Hitachi Energy’s power conversion systems provide? Primary and secondary frequency response, synthetic inertia, voltage regulation, reactive power support, ramp rate control and energy shifting. The fast dynamic response of the PCS — with millisecond-level active power control — enables participation in ancillary service markets and system integrity protection schemes (SIPS), as demonstrated at the Waratah Super Battery in New South Wales. What is the Power Plant Controller (PPC) and how does it integrate with a BESS? PPC is Hitachi Energy’s supervisory control platform for renewable and storage power plants. It sits between the operator’s SCADA system and the power conversion devices, managing dispatch, grid code compliance, state-of-charge optimisation and fault management. PPC integrates directly with the battery management system (BMS) from leading battery manufacturers, reducing project complexity and commissioning time. How does Hitachi Energy’s power conversion portfolio perform in extreme environments? The liquid-cooled platform eliminates forced-air ventilation, reducing dust ingress. Internal components carry protective coatings for resistance to saline corrosion. The system maintains rated performance at high ambient temperatures and altitudes. What industries and applications use Hitachi Energy’s power conversion products? Primarily utility-scale BESS, solar PV and hybrid solar-plus-storage plants. Additional applications include power conversion for green hydrogen electrolysis, large industrial energy storage, data centre power management and grid-to-rack solutions, and onshore or offshore wind grid connection. Used by project developers, independent power producers, utilities, grid operators and system integrators. What is Hitachi Energy’s installed base in power conversion? More than 10 GW of energy storage and renewable integration solutions delivered worldwide, with 350+ BESS and renewable energy references across utility, commercial and industrial applications and 30+ years of field experience. Named projects include the Waratah Super Battery (New South Wales), Finland’s largest BESS at Haapajärvi (125 MW / 250 MWh), and Porto Santo island. Interested? We are here to help! Grid forming technology

Home Products & Solutions Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) STATCOM Grid Forming Technology Grid forming technology As energy demand shifts, grid stability challenges increase The transition to a decarbonized power grid is rapidly increasing the need for grid forming technology. As synchronous fossil fuel-based generators retire and penetration of inverter-based renewable sources increases, the power system loses traditional sources of inertia, voltage stability, and frequency support. At the same time, electrification of energy-intensive industries like transport and heating places additional strain on grid stability. These shifts introduce major operational challenges: reduced inertia leads to more exaggerated frequency deviations, reduced short-circuit strength causes rapid voltage fluctuations, and intermittent renewable production complicates balancing supply and demand. Ensuring stable synchronization of many distributed inverter-based resources becomes more difficult, particularly as overall grid strength declines. Ensuring grid resilience with Grid forming inverters Grid forming technology addresses these issues by enabling converters to behave like voltage sources that naturally support system stability. They can provide fast frequency response, voltage regulation, and robust synchronization—capabilities that are essential in low‑inertia, renewable‑dominated grids. Hitachi Energy has developed grid‑forming functionality as a key feature of its Grid-enSure® portfolio, which consists of HVDC, medium voltage direct current (MVDC), STATCOM, Enhanced STATCOM, Static Frequency Converters (SFC), and Battery Energy Storage Solution (BESS) technologies, allowing these devices to contribute actively to voltage formation, disturbance rejection, and overall system resilience. As renewable penetration grows, such technologies become indispensable for maintaining a stable and reliable power system. Grid forming vs Grid following Today’s renewable plants mostly operate in grid following mode, which works well when the surrounding grid is strong but depends on external sources to maintain voltage and frequency. As conventional synchronous generators retire, this dependency becomes more challenging, especially in weaker networks. Grid forming technology offers a way forward by allowing converters to actively establish and stabilize voltage and frequency, strengthening grids that are increasingly dominated by inverter-based resources. Grid Forming (GFM) Grid Following (GFL) Helps stabilize the grid automatically, counteracting changes in voltage amplitude, frequency, and phase angle. Synchronizes its output based on existing grid conditions, using a phaselocked loop to align with grid voltage and maintain coordinated operation. Works reliably even in very weak grids, ideal for areas with lots of renewables or limited system strength. Performs reliably when grid strength is sufficient, though reliance on external voltage references limits performance in weaker networks. Provides a strong reference for other devices, acting like a voltage source that strengthens the surrounding network. Functions as a controlled current source, enabling predictable behavior within well‑regulated grid environments. Enables independent operation in energy islands or grid‑connected operation, offering flexibility for complex or evolving grid conditions. Supports system voltage at the connection point, providing dynamic reactive power adjustments to maintain acceptable operating conditions. Primary benefits of grid forming technology Supports grid strength Instantly supports voltage and frequency for steadier system operation, even in weak grids. Enables renewable integration Provides essential stability services missing from inverter-based renewables. Improves fault resilience Maintains control through disturbances, helping prevent trips, instability, or wider system impacts. Performs in weak grids Delivers reliable performance even where grid strength is low. Read more Frequently Asked Questions Is grid forming capability a future concept without real world installations? Grid forming capability is an established technology, with Hitachi Energy HVDC systems incorporating grid forming control since 2006 in projects worldwide. Its application in power-quality applications is more recent, with early adoption primarily in Europe and the United States, where Hitachi Energy has already commissioned STATCOMs equipped with grid forming functionality dating back to 2022. Does grid forming technology simply allow a STATCOM to act like a synchronous condenser? The grid forming STATCOM and SVC Light® Enhanced are more flexible assets than a SynCon, and can be easily tuned to operate with higher performance in different grid conditions, resulting in better utilization of installed power. SVC Light® Enhanced STATCOMs have about 10 times more usable inertial energy than a similarly rated SynCon. Is software-based synthetic inertia less dependable than traditional mechanical inertia? Synthetic inertia is not inherently less reliable than traditional mechanical inertia. In fact, modern grid forming converters, STATCOMs, and grid forming battery systems provide fast, accurate, tunable, and highly controllable inertial response that can outperform the fixed behavior of synchronous machines under many grid conditions. Can an existing grid following installation be upgraded with grid-forming functionality at a later stage? STATCOM using grid following control can be upgraded to grid forming functionality; however, the upgrade requires system studies to determine appropriate control settings, followed by recommissioning of the unit to install and validate the updated control software. Where does the inertia‑like energy come from? Synthetic inertia in a STATCOM is realized through grid-forming control algorithms rather than rotating mass. The STATCOM modulates active power injection based on the measured rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) and a configurable inertia constant. Since frequency deviations reflect load‑generation imbalance, this rapid power response counteracts frequency excursions and supports system stability by enabling coordinated primary and secondary control actions to be effectively deployed.
